Chapter 9 - Pulling Her UpRefusing to let her father close the doors or silence the truth any longer, Lily ignored his shouting, dropped to her knees, and reached both hands down into the cold, damp opening. "Grandma, grab my hands! I've got you, I won't let go!"

Martha stretched her thin, bruised arms upward from the staircase, her freezing fingers locking tightly around Lily’s wrists with desperate strength. Seeing that he was completely cornered, that his lies were shattered, and that the witnesses were watching his every move, David stopped dead in his tracks. His arms dropped slowly to his sides in total defeat as the weight of his crimes settled upon his shoulders. With a heavy sigh of bitter resignation, he stepped forward, knelt beside his daughter, and grabbed Martha’s frail arms to help hoist her out of the dark concrete vault. Together, the child and her guilty son dragged the matriarch back toward the world above.
