Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Excuse
Sarah wiped her face with a shaking hand, desperately trying to salvage her reputation in front of the stunned guests. "You don't understand... mother was losing her mind! She was erratic, she couldn't manage the estate's finances anymore!" Sarah stammered defensively.
"We didn't hurt her! We kept her safe down there!" David added weakly, trying to justify the unspeakable cruelty.
Martha scoffed, a bitter sound born of profound betrayal. "Safe? You locked me in a hole beneath the floorboards because I refused to sign over my inheritance to your offshore accounts!"
