Chapter 10 - Reunited in the Light
With a final heave, Martha was hoisted out of the dark cellar and onto the bright stone floor of the greenhouse. Lily immediately threw her arms around her grandmother’s neck, burying her face in Martha’s tattered cardigan as both of them sobbed uncontrollably.
Martha stroked Lily’s hair, her frail body shaking from years of malnourishment, cold, and isolation. "Thank you, my brave girl... you saved my life," Martha whispered, kissing Lily’s forehead while the warm sunlight finally washed over her face for the first time in over seven hundred days.
