Chapter 5 - Breaking the LockRealizing with crystal clarity that her parents were desperately trying to silence her and cover up whatever horrifying secret lay buried beneath the floor, Lily twisted violently out of Sarah’s loosened grasp. Ignoring her mother’s shrill screams to stop, Lily dove back toward the hatch with reckless abandon, snatched the heavy wooden mallet from the ground, and slammed it directly into the rusted padlock bracket with a furious shriek.

Crack! The rotten wood surrounding the iron latch splintered apart under the heavy, targeted blow, sending wood chips flying across the paving stones. With a final, sharp metallic snap, the aged lock gave way entirely, rendering the heavy wooden doors completely unlatched and free to open. Lily panted heavily, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird, knowing that there was no turning back now. The protective shield of lies her family had built around her had finally shattered, and she was standing at the precipice of an astonishing and terrifying discovery that would change their lives forever.
