Chapter 6 - The Face in the DarkBefore anyone across the room could physically intercept her, Lily grabbed the cold iron handle of the trapdoor and pulled upward with all her remaining strength. The heavy wooden panels creaked in protest, lifting outward and folding back to reveal a dark, pitch-black stone staircase leading down into a damp, suffocating concrete vault.

From the absolute blackness of the underground abyss, a pair of trembling, skeletal, frail hands reached upward into the blinding sunlight. A raspy, broken voice cried out from the depths, pleading in utter agony, "Lily... please, my child... help me..."
Lily gasped, freezing in place as she stared down into the terrifying darkness, watching as a pale, emaciated elderly woman with wild white hair peered up at her from the depths of the prison. The realization struck her like a physical blow: her grandmother was alive, and she had been trapped in this dark, airless hole while the family pretended she no longer existed. Tears streamed down Lily’s face as she looked into those hollow, desperate eyes.
