Chapter 4 - The Forbidden TruthStruggling fiercely against her mother’s iron grip, Lily planted her sneakers on the stone and pointed a shaking finger directly at the trapdoor, tears of frustration and confusion springing rapidly to her eyes. "Let me go! Grandma is down there! I heard her calling my name!"

The moment those forbidden words left Lily’s lips, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the entire greenhouse, as if the oxygen had been completely sucked out of the air. Sarah froze mid-motion, her hands going rigid on Lily’s shoulders. Across the dining table, Lily’s father dropped his fork with a sharp clatter against the porcelain plate, while her grandfather stood up abruptly from his chair, his face instantly draining of all natural color. The other family members seated at the table stared at one another in sheer bewilderment, realizing in a terrifying fraction of a second that the adults were harboring a dark, monstrous conspiracy. The name of the matriarch, long thought to be peacefully departed across the seas, hung in the air like a ghost summoned from the underworld.
