Chapter 1 - The Hidden Trapdoor

Chapter 1 - The Hidden TrapdoorThe grand glass greenhouse stood as a magnificent sanctuary of quiet beauty on the sprawling estate, its towering arched structure filled with rows of lush green ferns, blooming orchids, and warm sunlight streaming through the crystalline glass panes. Inside this botanical haven, a prosperous family sat gathered around a long, polished wooden dining table, enjoying a leisurely midday meal amid the gentle clinking of crystal glasses, fine silverware, and polite, subdued conversation. At the far end of the vast stone floor, away from the watchful eyes of the adults, ten-year-old Lily played quietly near an old iron-wheeled garden wheelbarrow, her small fingers brushing against the dusty paving stones as she hunted for a dropped pencil.
As she nudged the heavy wheelbarrow aside to peer beneath the planting benches, her eyes caught sight of something deeply unusual, half-hidden beneath a thick layer of autumn leaves and a pile of heavy gardening tools. It was a heavy wooden trapdoor, fitted with rugged iron hinges and secured by a massive, rusted padlock that looked as though it had not been touched in decades. Lily had lived on the estate for years, wandering its vast grounds freely, yet she had never noticed this hidden hatch tucked away in the corner of the greenhouse. A strange, inexplicable chill ran down her spine as she stared at the dark, weathered wood, sensing intuitively that something was deeply wrong right beneath their feet. The silence of the greenhouse suddenly felt heavy, pressing down on her shoulders as she wondered what secrets the earth below her was trying to hide from the rest of the world.
