Chapter 2 - The Desperate Strike

Chapter 2 - The Desperate StrikeDriven by a sudden, intense curiosity that completely overpowered her childhood caution, Lily abandoned the wheelbarrow and scurried over to investigate the hatch more closely. Resting beside a rusted metal bucket in the corner was a heavy wooden mallet—a tool usually employed by the groundskeepers for driving thick landscaping stakes deep into the soil. Without hesitating for a single second, Lily gripped the heavy tool with both small hands, hoisted it high above her head with all her might, and brought it crashing down onto the stubborn wooden latch.
Clang! The dull, reverberating metallic sound echoed loudly through the glass structure, rattling the nearby flower pots and startling a flock of birds outside. The adults at the dining table stopped eating instantly, turning their heads in sharp irritation and shock as Lily swung the mallet a second time with ferocious determination, chipping away at the aged, rotting wood surrounding the rusty lock. She could feel the vibrations traveling up her arms, but she refused to stop, driven by an inner voice that told her she was moments away from uncovering something that her family had kept concealed for far too long. The air grew tense as she prepared for a third, definitive strike against the barrier.
