Chapter 5 - The Truth in the Study

That evening, the penthouse was locked down under maximum biometric security.

Maisie and Rosie were fast asleep in the nursery, exhausted from the afternoon's excitement, guarded by two armed officers outside their door.

In my private study, a fire crackled in the hearth.

Elise sat in the leather armchair, wearing a soft cream sweater, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea with trembling hands.

She reached into the small locket around her neck, unfastening the delicate silver clasp. Inside the secret compartment was a micro-SD card smaller than a fingernail.

She placed the card gently onto my desk.

"My father gave this to me the night before he died, Dominic," Elise whispered, her voice cracking with grief. "He told me that Victor Rossi forced him to build a secondary exit tunnel and biometric bypass for his illicit currency vaults. When my father refused to hand over the master override, Rossi had his workshop set on fire."

I looked at the tiny chip, then looked up into her tearful brown eyes.

"Why didn't you give it to the police, Elise?"

"Because the precinct captains in our neighborhood were on Rossi's payroll," she wept softly. "If I handed it over, they would have killed me. I took the job at your house because I knew you were the only man in Chicago powerful enough to stand against Rossi. But I never wanted to put your daughters in danger. I swear on my mother's soul, Dominic... I love Maisie and Rosie with all my heart."

I stood up from behind the desk, walking over to where she sat.

I knelt on the floor beside her chair, taking her cold, trembling hands into mine.

"You didn't put my daughters in danger, Elise," I said, my voice steady, deep, and full of unyielding truth. "You gave them their joy back. You gave me my life back. And I will tear down the entire Rossi syndicate before I let anyone harm a single hair on your head."

Elise looked into my eyes, seeing the fierce, unwavering devotion of a man who had chosen his protector's vow.

She leaned forward, resting her forehead against my shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering sob as months of terror, loneliness, and running finally melted into the safety of my arms.
