Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the Gates

Over the next three weeks, the atmosphere inside the Caruso estate shifted dramatically.
The oppressive silence that had hung over the marble corridors for eighteen months was replaced by the sweet, lively sounds of childhood. Elise turned the grand dining room into an art studio, baking cookies with the twins and teaching them how to paint watercolor landscapes of Lake Michigan.
Maisie and Rosie no longer woke up screaming. They ran through the hallways with boundless energy, clutching Elise’s hands, their laughter breathing life into every cold corner of the mansion.
Every evening at 6:00 PM, when I returned from the shipping ports in my dark tailored suit, the girls would sprint into the grand foyer, shouting my name. And standing near the archway, greeting me with a gentle, radiant smile that made the exhaustion of corporate warfare melt away, was Elise.
I found myself lingering in the living room just to hear her voice. I watched the way she patiently tied their shoes, the tender way she kissed their foreheads when they scraped a knee, and the fierce, protective warmth that radiated from her soul.
She was bringing light back into my shattered world.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, my chief of security, Marco, requested an urgent meeting in my private study.
"Boss," Marco said, setting an intercepted surveillance log on my desk. "We have a problem outside the gates."
I leaned forward, my jaw tightening. "Report."
"Two enforcers from the Rossi syndicate have been parked down the street in a black sedan for forty-eight hours," Marco explained, tapping a photo of a bruised, scarred thug. "They're tracking Elise Navarro."
"Why?"
"Mateo Navarro didn't die in a random fire, Boss," Marco revealed, his voice dropping into deadly seriousness. "Mateo was the master craftsman who built the custom biometric security vaults for Victor Rossi’s primary cash counting house in Cicero. Before Mateo died, he hid the master architectural schematic override on an encrypted flash drive. Rossi believes Mateo gave that drive to his daughter before he passed."
My fists clenched on the mahogany desk until my knuckles turned white.
"Rossi thinks he can intimidate a member of my household to steal a vault key?" I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, icy register.
"They're planning to intercept her when she takes the twins to the Lincoln Park conservatory tomorrow morning," Marco warned.

I stood up, buttoning my suit jacket, the ruthless predator inside me roaring to life.
"Let them try," I said coldly. "Double the tactical perimeter. Tomorrow, Victor Rossi learns what happens when he threatens my family."
