Chapter 4 - THE MEAL SHE COULD NOT AFFORDThe menu was filled with expensive dishes.
The elderly woman held it with trembling hands.
She could barely understand some of the names.
Clara noticed.
“What do you usually like to eat?”
The old woman thought.
“Soup.”
Clara smiled.
“Then soup it is.”
“And perhaps some vegetables.”
“Of course.”
The elderly woman looked surprised.
“You are not going to order something expensive?”
Clara laughed softly.
“Why would I?”
The old woman looked down.
“People usually do not want to be seen with someone like me.”
Clara's expression changed.
“Someone like you?”
The woman shrugged.
“Old. Poor. Unimportant.”
Clara leaned forward.
“You are none of those things.”
The elderly woman looked at her.
Clara continued.
“You are a person.”
For several seconds, the woman said nothing.
Then her eyes filled with tears.
The food arrived.
The elderly woman slowly lifted her spoon.
