He contacted old business partners.
He searched through public records.
He found something strange.
The original company records had been stored in a warehouse.
The warehouse was now owned by a company connected to Victor.
Daniel and Clara went there with Margaret.
The building was nearly abandoned.
Dust covered the shelves.
Old boxes filled the basement.
Margaret slowly walked through the room.
Then she stopped.
She pointed toward a corner.
“That box.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Contracts.
Receipts.
Bank statements.
And one folder marked:
PROJECT MARGARET.
Margaret's hands began to shake.
Daniel opened the folder.
The documents showed that money had been transferred from Margaret's company.
But the signatures had been forged.
The person who had authorized the transfers was not Margaret.
It was Victor.
Margaret covered her mouth.
After all these years…
The truth had been waiting in a dusty basement.
