Chapter 11 - THE OLD NOTEBOOKMargaret reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small black notebook.

The cover was worn.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Amounts of money.

Clara looked at the pages.

“What is this?”

“Everything I could remember.”

“Why keep it?”

“Because one day, someone might believe me.”

Clara looked at the notebook.

Then at Margaret.

“I believe you.”

Margaret stared at her.

“You don't know me.”

“No.”

Clara smiled.

“But I know what it feels like when someone is treated unfairly.”

Margaret looked surprised.

Clara continued:

“My father once lost everything too.”

Margaret listened.

“He rebuilt his business from nothing.”

Clara looked toward the restaurant.

“That is why I know people can be pushed down.”

Margaret closed the notebook.

“But sometimes they don't get back up.”

Clara looked at her.

“Then perhaps you need someone to help you.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I have no money.”

May you like

Clara smiled.

“Who said help has to begin with money?”
