Chapter 6 - THE MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPHEmma found the photograph three days later.

It was hidden in an old box in the attic.
The picture showed her father.
He was younger.
Perhaps thirty.
Beside him stood a woman Emma had never seen.
The woman was holding a baby.
Emma turned the photograph over.
On the back was a date.
The date was six months before Emma was born.
And beneath it, four words.
I am sorry, Claire.
Emma searched her father's records.
Claire Bennett.
She found the name in an old legal document.
Then she discovered something horrifying.
Claire Bennett had once sued Robert Carter for paternity.
The case had been sealed.
Emma's heart pounded.
She confronted her father.
“Who is Claire Bennett?”
Robert went completely still.
For the first time in Emma's life, she saw fear in his eyes.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Who is she?”
He stood.
“Emma, this is not something you need to know.”
She laughed.
“Apparently, I am the only person in this family who knows nothing.”
Robert sat down.
Then he whispered:
“Claire was someone I knew before your mother.”
“And the baby?”
He looked at Emma.
“I don't know.”

That answer was a lie.
Emma knew it immediately.
