Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER'S CONFESSIONEvelyn closed the door.

“You saw the documents.”
Emma said nothing.
Her mother sat down.
For the first time, she looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I never wanted this to happen.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“You had three years to stop it.”
Evelyn lowered her head.
“I loved Daniel.”
“And Dad?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I loved your father too.”
Emma stared at her.
“You cannot love two people and destroy one of them.”
“I was lonely.”
“So was Dad.”
“He was always working.”
“And you chose to betray him.”
Evelyn began crying.
Then she said something Emma had not expected.
“Daniel was not the one who started this.”
Emma frowned.
“What?”
“Your father knew.”
Emma froze.
“What do you mean?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Robert knew I was unhappy.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“He knew.”
“Then why did he stay?”
Evelyn's expression changed.
“Because your father has secrets too.”
Emma felt the room shift beneath her.
“What secrets?”
Her mother looked toward the door.
“I cannot tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because if you learn the truth, you will hate both of us.”
May you like
Emma stood.
“Maybe I already do.”
