Chapter 16 - THE LETTER FROM PRISONA year later, Emma received a letter from Evelyn.

She almost threw it away.
Instead, she opened it.
Her mother wrote about the past.
About her loneliness.
Her fear of aging.
Her jealousy of the life Robert had built.
But for once, Evelyn did not use those things as excuses.
She wrote:
I was lonely. But loneliness did not force me to betray you. I chose to betray you.
Emma read the sentence twice.
Then continued.
I was afraid. But fear did not force me to manipulate your father. I chose to do that too.
At the end, Evelyn wrote:
You were the only person in this family brave enough to tell the truth. I hated you for it before I understood that you were right.
Emma folded the letter.
She did not forgive her mother.
But for the first time, she believed the apology.
And sometimes, believing an apology was the beginning of healing.
Not reconciliation.
May you like
Not yet.
Just healing.
