Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKERobert stood.
He looked at Evelyn.
“Was any of it real?”
Evelyn cried.
“I loved you.”
Robert laughed bitterly.
“While planning to take everything from me?”
“I was afraid.”
“You were greedy.”
The word hit her.
Evelyn slapped him.
The room went silent.
Then Robert looked at her.
“I should have told Emma about Lily.”
“Yes,” Emma said.
“You should have ended our marriage honestly.”
“Yes.”
“You should never have trusted Daniel.”
“Yes.”
Robert looked at his daughter.
“And I should have been a better father.”
Emma did not answer.
Because for the first time, he was finally telling the truth.
The police arrived that night.
Daniel was arrested.
Evelyn was taken for questioning.
Robert remained in the house.
But the Carter estate no longer felt like home.
