Chapter 19 - THE LAST CONVERSATIONYears later, Emma visited her mother.

Evelyn was older.
Her hair was gray.
Her face was thinner.
But her eyes were calmer.
Emma sat across from her.
“I heard Lily visited last month.”
“She did.”
“She says you're doing well.”
“I am trying.”
Emma nodded.
They sat in silence.
Then Evelyn asked:
“Do you hate me?”
Emma looked at her.
“I used to.”
“And now?”
Emma thought carefully.
“Now I understand you.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“That sounds worse.”
“Sometimes it is.”
They both laughed quietly.
Emma reached across the table.
Not to embrace her.
Not to pretend the past was gone.
Just to touch her hand.
“I don't know if I can ever be your daughter the way I was before.”
Evelyn nodded.
“You shouldn't.”
“But I can be someone who knows you.”
Evelyn cried.
And Emma realized that forgiveness did not always mean returning to the past.
May you like
Sometimes it meant accepting that the past had happened.
Then choosing not to let it control the future.
