Chapter 14 - THE COURTROOMThe trial began.

Daniel pleaded guilty.
He testified against Evelyn.
Evelyn insisted she never intended to harm Robert.
The prosecution argued that financial fraud was still fraud.
The court heard everything.
The affair.
The financial scheme.
The forged documents.
The attempted manipulation of Robert's mental health records.
Emma testified.
She did not cry.
She told the truth.
Even when it hurt her mother.
Even when it embarrassed her father.
Even when the newspapers called the Carter family a scandal.
When asked why she had exposed everything, Emma answered:
“Because secrets had already destroyed my family.”
The judge looked at her.
“Do you regret revealing the affair?”
Emma paused.
Then said:
May you like
“I regret that I had to discover the truth alone.”
That sentence became the headline the next morning.
