Chapter 3 - THE LIE THAT STARTED FOUR YEARS AGO“Tell me.”
My voice sounded strangely calm.
Brandon looked at me.
“Emma—”
“Tell me.”
Madeline interrupted.
“He knew Luke wasn't yours.”
Brandon turned sharply.
“Stop.”
“He knew before he married you.”
My knees nearly gave way.
I stared at him.
“Is that true?”
Brandon's face collapsed.
“I knew there was a possibility.”
“A possibility?”
Madeline laughed.
“You knew exactly what happened.”
The pediatric wing seemed to disappear around us.
There was only Brandon.
His silence.
And the envelope in his hand.
I whispered:
“Why did you marry me?”
He looked broken.
“Because I loved you.”
“No.”
The word came out before I could stop it.
“If you loved me, you would have told me.”
He had no answer.
Madeline stepped closer.
“Your husband made a mistake.”
I looked at her.
“You call four years of lies a mistake?”
Her expression hardened.
“You deceived my son.”
I almost laughed.
“I deceived him?”
Madeline pointed toward the envelope.
“Luke was born after you had an affair.”
The world stopped.
I looked at Brandon.
He did not deny it.
And suddenly, I understood.
The DNA test.
The secret.
The reason he had been terrified.
The reason Madeline had watched me with hatred for four years.
But there was one problem.
I had never cheated on Brandon.
Not once.
And Luke was absolutely my son.
I looked at Madeline.
“You're lying.”
