Chapter 7 - THE RESULTThe doctor entered the room.

His expression was serious.
I immediately stood.
“What did the test show?”
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, the results confirm that you are Luke's biological mother.”
I stopped breathing.
Madeline froze.
Brandon closed his eyes.
The doctor continued.
“The maternal relationship is confirmed.”
I turned toward Madeline.
She had gone pale.
“You said—”
“I was wrong.”
Her voice was barely audible.
I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I had spent two days being accused of betraying my own family.
And she had been wrong.
But then the doctor continued.
“There is one unusual finding.”
My smile disappeared.
“What?”
“The test confirms the maternal relationship.”
He looked at Brandon.
“But the paternal result is inconclusive.”
Brandon frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the sample we received from you cannot be reliably compared to Luke's DNA.”
I stared.
“Why?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Because the genetic markers are inconsistent.”
Brandon's face turned white.
Madeline suddenly sat down.
I looked between them.
“What's happening?”
The doctor spoke carefully.
“Mr. Carter, we may need to repeat your DNA test.”
Brandon did not answer.

Because Madeline already knew.
And this time, she was terrified.
