Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO GAVE HIM LIFESarah met Luke in the park.
She stood several feet away.
She was nervous.
Luke hid behind my leg.
I crouched beside him.
“Luke, this is Sarah.”
He looked at her.
“Are you Grandma?”
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
She smiled gently.
“I'm your Aunt Sarah.”
Luke thought about that.
“Do you like cake?”
Sarah laughed.
“Yes.”
“Grandma Madeline doesn't.”
The smile disappeared from Sarah's face.
I gently touched Luke's shoulder.
“Luke.”
He shrugged.
“She kicked it.”
Sarah looked at me.
I nodded.
“It happened.”
Sarah crouched down.
“I'm sorry.”
Luke stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because sometimes adults make very bad choices.”
Luke seemed satisfied.
“Do you want some cake?”
Sarah laughed through her tears.
“Yes.”
Luke took her hand.
And walked toward the picnic table.
I watched them.
For the first time, I understood something.
Family was not always about blood.
