Chapter 13 - THE HIDDEN ACCOUNTThe investigation into Madeline uncovered something else.
For years, she had secretly transferred money.
Millions of dollars.
The money came from Brandon's company.
At first, he believed she had stolen it.
Then the bank records revealed the truth.
She had been paying for a private investigation.
She had searched for Sarah.
She had searched for Luke.
She had paid doctors.
Lawyers.
Private investigators.
And even the former fertility clinic administrator.
But one payment stood out.
A payment made four years ago.
To a man named Daniel Reed.
Daniel was the doctor who had performed the embryo transfer.
He had received money from Madeline.
The same doctor who had signed the original records.
The same doctor who had claimed the procedure had failed.
Brandon stared at the records.
“Why would she pay him?”
I looked at the date.
The payment had been made one week before Luke was born.
Then another payment appeared.
One week after his birth.
The amount was enormous.

Madeline had not merely discovered the truth.
She had paid someone to hide it.
