Chapter 6 - THE FERTILITY CLINICI demanded the complete medical records.

The hospital contacted the fertility clinic.

The clinic no longer existed.

It had been sold three years earlier.

The original doctor had moved overseas.

But the records had been preserved.

A legal request was sent.

Two days later, we received them.

The files were incomplete.

Several pages were missing.

Including the pages that identified the embryo used in my procedure.

I stared at the empty space.

“Someone removed them.”

Brandon looked at me.

“Who?”

The clinic's former administrator provided the answer.

“Your mother-in-law requested access to the records.”

My blood ran cold.

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

The exact week Luke was born.

Madeline denied everything.

Then the administrator produced a signed authorization.

Madeline's signature was on it.

Brandon confronted her.

“You accessed her medical records?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You stole her private medical information.”

“I was trying to prove the truth.”

I stepped between them.

“What truth?”

Madeline looked at me.

“That you were never supposed to be Luke's mother.”

The words made no sense.

I had carried him.

Given birth to him.

Held him against my chest.

How could I not be his mother?

Then the doctor called.

The DNA results were ready.
