Chapter 4 - THE TESTThe doctor returned.

“Mrs. Carter, we need your blood sample.”

I stared at him.

“Of course.”

Madeline stepped forward.

“I have already arranged—”

“No.”

I interrupted.

Everyone looked at me.

“I want an independent test.”

Madeline's eyes narrowed.

“I don't think you understand the urgency.”

“I understand perfectly.”

I looked at Brandon.

“I want a test performed by a laboratory neither of you selected.”

Brandon nodded immediately.

“Fine.”

Madeline's expression changed.

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

The doctor took my sample.

Then Luke's.

Brandon gave his.

The results would take several hours.

I sat beside Luke's hospital bed.

He was still unconscious.

His tiny hand rested on the blanket.

I touched it.

“Mommy's here.”

His eyelids fluttered.

“Mommy?”

I leaned closer.

“Yes, baby.”

“Did Grandma get mad?”

My heart broke.

“No.”

He frowned weakly.

“She said I wasn't her grandson.”

I looked toward Brandon.

His face went white.

Luke continued:

“I tried to give her cake.”

“I know.”

“She didn't want it.”

I kissed his forehead.

“You did nothing wrong.”

He closed his eyes again.

Across the room, Brandon stood motionless.

Then he whispered:

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

He had tears in his eyes.

“I should have told you everything.”

I said nothing.

Because after four years of silence…

I no longer knew whether I wanted the truth.
