Chapter 20 - THE CAKEYears later, Luke made another cake.

He was sixteen.

It was terrible.

The icing was uneven.

The edges were burned.

He proudly carried it into the kitchen.

“Mom, I made this.”

I looked at the cake.

“It looks…”

I paused.

“Interesting.”

Luke laughed.

Brandon took a piece.

Sarah took one too.

Then Luke placed a slice on a small plate.

“I'm sending this to Grandma.”

I froze.

Madeline had been released from prison months earlier.

She lived alone now.

She had lost almost everything.

But she had begun therapy.

She had apologized to Sarah.

To Brandon.

To me.

Not once.

Many times.

I watched Luke carry the cake toward the door.

“Are you sure?”

He turned.

“She is still my grandma.”

I looked at him.

“Even after everything?”

Luke shrugged.

“She was wrong.”

He thought for a moment.

“But maybe she can learn.”

I smiled sadly.

“Maybe.”

That evening, Madeline opened the door.

Luke stood outside.

Holding the cake.

She stared at him.

Then began to cry.

“I made it,” he said.

Madeline looked at the plate.

“Thank you.”

Luke smiled.

“You have to eat it.”

She laughed through her tears.

“I will.”

And this time…

She did not kick it away.

She accepted it with both hands.

Because some families are destroyed by blood.

Some are built by lies.

But the strongest families are the ones that finally understand the truth:

A child is not a secret.

Not a weapon.

Not an inheritance.

Not a possession.

And love is not proven by DNA.

It is proven by who stays.

Who protects.

Who chooses you.

Again.

And again.

May you like

And again.

THE END
