Chapter 8 - THE WRONG MANThe second DNA test was conducted under strict supervision.

No one could interfere.
No one could access the results.
The laboratory was independent.
Three days later, Brandon and I sat in the doctor's office.
Luke was stable.
But the truth was not.
The doctor opened the file.
“Mr. Carter…”
Brandon's hands trembled.
“The test confirms that you are not Luke's biological father.”
Silence.
I looked at Brandon.
He seemed to stop breathing.
Madeline stood behind him.
Then whispered:
“I told you.”
I turned toward her.
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“I knew.”
“Then why did you blame me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I thought you were the only explanation.”
I stared at her.
“You knew Brandon wasn't Luke's father.”
“Yes.”
“And you still accused me?”
“I believed you had an affair.”
“Why?”
Madeline looked at her son.
“Because Brandon isn't your husband's biological son either.”
I froze.
The room became silent.
Brandon slowly turned toward his mother.
“What did you say?”
Madeline began crying.
“Your father was not your biological father.”
Brandon took a step backward.
“No.”
“I found out years ago.”
He stared at her.
“And you never told me?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Madeline looked at him.
“Of losing you.”
Brandon's face twisted with disbelief.
May you like
“You destroyed everyone else's life to keep me?”
She had no answer.
