Chapter 19 - THE BOY WHO KNEW THE TRUTHLuke was eight when he finally asked.

“Mommy, why does everyone say I look like Aunt Sarah?”
I looked at Brandon.
We had prepared for this conversation.
But preparation did not make it easier.
I sat beside Luke.
“Families can be connected in many ways.”
He listened.
“Sometimes people share blood.”
I nodded.
“Sometimes people share love.”
He thought about that.
“Do I share blood with Daddy?”
I took a breath.
“No.”
Luke looked at Brandon.
Brandon's eyes filled with tears.
“But Daddy is still your daddy.”
Luke frowned.
“Because you love me?”
“Yes.”
Luke considered this.
Then hugged him.
“Then that's okay.”
Brandon held him tightly.
And I realized something.
Children often understand what adults spend years refusing to accept.
Love was not made weaker by the truth.

It became stronger.
Because it no longer needed a lie to survive.
