Chapter 18 - THE LETTER FROM MADELINEMonths later, I received a letter from prison.

I knew immediately who it was from.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I opened it.
Madeline had written only one page.
I used to believe that if something was connected to my blood, it belonged to me.
I continued reading.
I was wrong.
She wrote about Sarah.
About the years she had lost.
About the pain of discovering the truth.
Then she wrote:
Luke is not mine. He never was.
I stopped.
The sentence was simple.
But it had taken her years to understand.
You are his mother. Not because of the DNA test. Not because you carried him. But because you protected him when I tried to turn him into a weapon.
I folded the letter.
I did not forgive her.
May you like

But for the first time, I believed she might finally understand.
