Sophia opened them.
Her hands began to tremble.
They were photographs.
Ethan and Vanessa.
Together.
At a hotel.
The same week Sophia had discovered she was pregnant.
Sophia had known Ethan was cheating.
But she had never known how long it had lasted.
She had believed the affair began months later.
The photographs proved otherwise.
Sophia confronted Ethan.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Ethan went pale.
“About what?”
She placed the photographs on the table.
He closed his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That you would hate me.”
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“You thought hiding more would make me hate you less?”
“I was ashamed.”
“You should have been.”
Ethan did not defend himself.
That made her angrier.
“You don't get to become a good man by hiding the worst parts of yourself.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He looked at her.
“I know that I hurt you more than you ever knew.”
Sophia walked away.
For the first time in years, the walls she had built around her heart began to crack.
