She appeared outside Ethan's office.
He almost did not recognize her.
She looked thinner.
Older.
Desperate.
“I need your help.”
Ethan stared at her.
“No.”
“You don't even know what I want.”
“I know enough.”
She told him she had been abandoned by the people who helped her steal the money.
She had lost everything.
She claimed she wanted forgiveness.
Ethan listened.
Then asked:
“Where is the money?”
Vanessa looked away.
That was all he needed.
“You don't want forgiveness.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You still love me.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“No.”
He thought of Sophia.
Of Noah.
Of the man he had been.
“I don't love you.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Then why are you so angry?”
“Because I was stupid.”
He walked away.
But Vanessa was not finished.
She knew a secret.
