Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING DISAPPEAREDAnna explained everything in a private room.

Years earlier, she had discovered that money was being secretly removed from the family foundation.
The money had been intended for orphaned children and struggling families.
Anna had found evidence.
She had planned to expose it.
But before she could, she was accused of stealing from the foundation.
Charles had believed the evidence.
He had believed the people around him.
He had believed Anna had betrayed the family.
“I was young,” Anna said.
“I was angry.”
Charles lowered his head.
“What happened?”
“I ran.”
Anna looked at Lily.
“Then I found out I was pregnant.”
Charles stared at the child.
Anna continued.
“Evelyn found me.”
Charles looked toward the door.
“She told me that if I ever came back, Lily would disappear.”
Charles' face became hard.
“She threatened my granddaughter?”
Anna nodded.
“She said you would never believe me.”
Charles closed his eyes.
For eleven years, he had believed his daughter was dead.
Meanwhile, she had been living in fear.
And the woman who had stood beside him during all those years had known the truth.
Charles suddenly understood why Evelyn had reacted so strongly to Lily.
