Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ALIVEA black car arrived outside the hotel.
Charles' security team surrounded it.
The back door opened.
A woman stepped out.
She was thin.
Pale.
And exhausted.
But Charles knew her face immediately.
His heart stopped.
“Anna.”
The woman looked at him.
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then Anna whispered:
“Father.”
Charles walked toward her.
He wanted to embrace her.
But he stopped.
He did not know whether she wanted him to.
Anna looked past him.
Her eyes found Lily.
The little girl ran toward her.
“Mommy!”
Anna dropped to her knees.
She held Lily tightly.
Charles turned away for a moment.
He had spent eleven years believing his daughter was dead.
Eleven years of grief.
Eleven years of unanswered questions.
Now she stood in front of him.
Alive.
But clearly afraid.
Charles looked at her.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I had no choice.”
“Who threatened you?”
Anna looked toward the ballroom.
Her eyes stopped on Evelyn.
Evelyn was standing perfectly still.
