Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN WHO VANISHEDEvelyn had left the city.
But she had not left alone.
Two people had helped her escape.
One was a former employee.
The other was someone inside Charles' security team.
Charles immediately became worried about Lily.
He moved Anna and Lily to a secure estate.
For the first time, Lily had her own room.
A warm bed.
A desk.
Books.
Clothes.
But she did not sleep.
Charles found her sitting by the window.
“Can't sleep?”
She shook her head.
“Is the bad woman coming?”
Charles sat beside her.
“I won't let anyone hurt you.”
Lily looked at him.
“Can you promise?”
Charles paused.
He had learned not to make promises he could not keep.
So he answered honestly.
“I can promise that I will do everything I can to protect you.”
Lily thought about that.
Then she nodded.
“That's okay.”
The next morning, Charles received a message.
A photograph of Lily asleep.
Taken inside the estate.
