Chapter 5 - THE SECRET IN THE CLOTH BAGCharles noticed Lily's cloth bag.

“What is inside?”

Lily immediately pulled it closer.

“Nothing.”

Charles did not press her.

“That is okay.”

But a few minutes later, Lily quietly opened it.

Inside was a small wooden box.

The box was scratched and old.

Charles recognized the symbol carved into the lid.

His family symbol.

He stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

Lily looked nervous.

“My mother gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“She said never to open it.”

Charles touched the box.

His fingers went cold.

The symbol belonged to his father.

It had been used on the documents of the Grant family decades earlier.

Only three people had ever possessed boxes like this.

His father.

His daughter Anna.

And Charles himself.

“Where did your mother find it?”

Lily shook her head.

“She didn't tell me.”

Charles looked at the box.

Then at the letter.

Something was wrong.

Anna had not simply sent Lily to find him.

She had sent her with evidence.

Evidence of something Charles had never known.

Evelyn approached.

“What is that?”

Charles immediately closed the cloth bag.

“Nothing.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You have never been good at hiding things from me.”

Charles looked at her.

“Then perhaps you should be worried.”

For the first time that night, Evelyn looked afraid.
