Chapter 13 - THE BLUE DOORThe foundation office had been abandoned for years.
The building was scheduled for demolition.
Charles arrived with Anna, Lily, and his security team.
The hallway was covered in dust.
Most of the doors were white.
Then Lily stopped.
She pointed ahead.
“That one.”
A blue door.
Charles stared at it.
Lily had never been there before.
At least, that was what Anna believed.
They opened the door.
Inside was an empty office.
A broken desk.
Old cabinets.
A faded carpet.
Lily walked slowly toward the wall.
She touched a loose wooden panel.
“There.”
Charles removed it.
Behind the panel was a small metal box.
Anna began to cry.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Photographs.
And a recording.
The original evidence.
The evidence Anna had been accused of stealing.
Charles looked at the documents.
The foundation money had been transferred by someone else.
Someone who had signed Charles' name.
Anna had been innocent.
She had been innocent all along.
Charles turned toward her.
“I am sorry.”
Anna looked at him.
“I waited eleven years to hear that.”
He lowered his head.
“I know.”
But before they could leave, the building's lights suddenly went out.

“Put the box down.”
