Chapter 9 - THE INVESTIGATIONThe investigation widened.
Celeste confessed.
Evelyn had instructed her to use Adrian's access credentials.
The stolen money had been moved through shell companies.
Evelyn had promised Celeste a place beside Adrian.
She had promised control of a trust.
She had promised that Celeste would give the Mercer family the heir I supposedly could not.
But then something unexpected happened.
Celeste gave birth.
The baby was a boy.
And Adrian ordered a paternity test.
The result came back negative.
The child was not his.
Everyone expected Adrian to abandon the baby.
He did not.
He created a trust.
Because the child had not committed the crimes of his mother.
When he told me, I looked at him.
“You believe the baby may not be yours.”
“Yes.”
“And you are still helping him?”
“The child did not commit fraud.”
That was the first time I saw the man I had married.
