Chapter 14 - GRACE GROWS UPGrace grew up knowing her mother.
Not through lies.
Not through a perfect portrait.
Through stories.
Her father told her Mia hated white roses.
He told her Mia cheated at cards.
He told her Mia burned toast.
He told her Mia had once laughed so hard in a restaurant that milk came out of her nose.
He told her about the woman who loved fiercely.
The woman who was afraid.
The woman who had been hurt.
The woman who had chosen to forgive without returning.
Grace grew up with photographs.
Letters.
Videos.
And a blue box.
At the age of sixteen, she finally asked:
“Did you love her?”
Adrian did not hesitate.
“Yes.”
“Did you stop?”
He looked at Mia's photograph.
“No.”
Grace stared at him.
“Then why didn't you stay together?”
Adrian answered:

“Because love is not always enough to make someone safe.”
That answer stayed with her.
