Chapter 12 - THE LETTERTwo days later, Nora gave Adrian the letter.

He opened it after Grace fell asleep.
I had written it before surgery.
Adrian,
If you are reading this, my heart finally became tired of carrying what we did to each other.
I did not go to your wedding for revenge.
I went because I needed Grace to know her father.
I needed to know whether the man I once loved still existed beneath the man who abandoned me.
He did.
I saw him when you first held her.
I saw him when you learned how to warm a bottle.
I saw him when you protected a child who might not even be yours.
Do not spend the rest of your life hating yourself.
Guilt is not love.
Raise Grace with honesty.
Let her disagree with you.
When she is hurt, do not solve her pain by finding someone to blame.
Sit beside her.
Stay.
That is all I ever needed from you.
Tell her I chose her even when choosing her frightened me.
Tell her she was worth every heartbeat.
Mia.
Adrian read the letter three times.

Then he carried Grace to the piano.
And played the melody that had once quieted her in the hospital.
