Chapter 11 - THE HEARTThree days later, the transplant coordinator arrived.

They had found a heart.

A chance.

More time with Grace.

Adrian held my hand.

“You are going to survive.”

“You cannot promise that.”

“Then I will believe it.”

Before surgery, I told him:

“You must tell Grace about me.”

“Every day.”

“Not the version where I was perfect.”

He smiled through tears.

“Tell her I burned toast.”

“I will.”

“Tell her I hated white roses.”

“I will.”

“Tell her I cheated at cards.”

“I will.”

I looked at him.

“And tell her I loved her before I knew whether I would live.”

His face broke.

“You can tell her yourself.”

The doors closed.

The surgery lasted nine hours.

The new heart began beating.

For twelve hours, everything looked hopeful.

Then complications began.

The heart struggled.

My blood pressure fell.

Doctors fought.

Adrian waited outside.

At midnight, the surgeon came out.

He did not need to speak.

Adrian understood.

“No.”

The surgeon lowered his eyes.

“I am sorry.”

Grace cried in Nora's arms.

Adrian collapsed onto the floor.
