Chapter 6 - THE PATERNITY TESTCeleste demanded proof.

Nora gave Adrian the report.

He stared at it.

Again.

And again.

99.99 percent.

His daughter.

The child he had never known existed.

The child he had believed impossible.

Celeste accused me of forging the report.

Nora calmly explained the court-supervised chain of custody.

Adrian looked at me.

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The morning after you filed for divorce.”

His expression changed.

“You were in a hotel with Celeste.”

He looked at Celeste.

She began to cry.

But I was not finished.

I told him about the calls.

The emails.

His mother's interference.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“That is a lie.”

I turned toward her.

“No.”

Then Nora placed the banking records on the table.

Four million eight hundred thousand dollars.

My inheritance.

Gone.

The money had been moved through companies connected to Celeste.

Evelyn said it was protection.

Adrian asked:

“Did you take Mia's money?”

Evelyn did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Then Celeste made the mistake that destroyed everything.

She said:

“Your mother told me Mia was probably going to lose the baby anyway.”

Adrian stared at her.

“What?”

Evelyn's face hardened.

Celeste continued.

“She said there was no reason to delay the divorce over another pregnancy that probably wouldn't survive.”

I watched Adrian understand.

His mother knew.

Celeste knew.

Everyone knew.

Except him.

Except the father.

Except the man who had walked away from his pregnant wife believing she was empty.

He looked at me.

“I didn't know.”

May you like

I answered:

“You didn't ask.”
