Chapter 10 - THE HEART THAT WAS FAILINGMy condition worsened.

The medication slowed the decline.

It did not stop it.

I was placed on the transplant list.

Adrian began sleeping in the hospital chair.

At first, I objected.

Then I stopped.

One rainy night, he spoke about the past.

He admitted the truth.

He had blamed me for the miscarriages because blaming himself was unbearable.

His mother had given his fear a name.

That name was me.

He had let grief turn into cruelty.

He had chosen the woman who praised him over the woman who knew him.

“I cannot undo what I did,” he said.

“No.”

“I cannot give you back the years.”

“No.”

“I cannot ask you to love me again.”

“You should not.”

He looked at me.

“I only need you to know that every decent thing I do from now on will begin with the shame of what I did to you.”

For years, I had wanted an apology.

When it finally came, it did not repair me.

But it released something.

“I forgive you,” I whispered.

He covered his face.

Then I added:

“I am still not coming back.”

May you like

He nodded.

“I know.”
