Chapter 2 - THE WIFE HE THOUGHT WAS BARRENAdrian and I had once loved each other.

That was the most inconvenient truth.

When we met, he was twenty-six.

He was supposed to inherit his father's company, but he hated the idea.

He sketched buildings on napkins.

Took me to cheap diners at midnight.

And left the hallway light on during storms because he knew I hated thunder.

I believed that man was real.

Then we got married.

Then we tried to have children.

The first miscarriage changed us.

The second destroyed something.

But not in the way Adrian claimed.

He said I became obsessed with pregnancy.

The truth was that I became terrified of losing another baby.

He said I stopped being his wife.

The truth was that I was barely surviving.

His mother, Evelyn Mercer, saw my grief as an opportunity.

“A man like Adrian needs a woman who can give him an heir,” she said.

Adrian heard her.

He said nothing.

That silence became the beginning of the end.

Then Celeste appeared.

His assistant.

Beautiful.

Confident.

Fertile, according to everyone who wanted me to hear it.

She began staying late.

Then traveling with him.

Then appearing in photographs I was never supposed to see.

When I confronted Adrian, he said:

“You are imagining things.”

I wasn't.

By the time he filed for divorce, I was six weeks pregnant.

I tried to tell him.

But his mother answered his phone.

She told me Adrian was in a hotel.

Then she said:

“If you want money, speak through your lawyer.”

I called again.

She blocked me.

I sent an email.

It disappeared from his account.

Then Adrian signed the divorce papers.

He believed I had chosen silence.

I believed he had chosen another woman.

Both of us were wrong.

But only one of us knew the truth.
