Chapter 27 - LUCAS'S CONFESSIONLucas met them inside a police station.

Emily had expected someone threatening.

Instead she saw a tired thirty-four-year-old man who looked disturbingly like Ryan.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Different life.

Lucas confessed that Martin found him when he was twenty-six.

He told Lucas the Carter family had abandoned him.

Then offered to help prove his identity.

In exchange, Lucas performed small tasks.

Deliver documents.

Open accounts.

Sign corporate forms.

“I thought I was recovering what my father stole from me.”

“When did you realize?” Ryan asked.

“Three years ago.”

Lucas discovered one company held millions in loans secured against trust property.

Martin controlled it.

Lucas tried to leave.

Martin threatened Evelyn.

“So you stayed.”

Lucas nodded.

Then Emily asked:

“Why did you let them use Noah's name?”

Lucas looked ashamed.

“I didn't.”

He opened his bag.

Inside was the original beneficiary amendment.

It recognized Lucas.

But Noah's section was different.

The authentic document protected Noah's interest.

The version filed by Maddox transferred temporary control away from Ryan.

Someone had altered it.

Lucas handed Ryan another folder.

“These are Martin's internal payments.”

Emily scanned the pages.

Hundreds of thousands.

Then one figure stopped her.

$75,000 — S. Maddox.

Payment date:

Two days before Ryan and Natalie's divorce hearing was missed.

Natalie whispered, “He was paid to lose our case.”

Ryan said nothing.

Lucas turned to Emily.

“There's one more thing.”

He placed a death certificate on the table.

Thomas Carter's official cause of death was cardiac arrest.

But attached was a private toxicology request.

Ordered the night Thomas died.

Emily looked up.

“Why was this never completed?”

May you like

Lucas answered:

“Because Martin canceled it.”
