Chapter 11 - THE MESSAGE EMILY WASN’T SUPPOSED TO SEEFour months after Emily put her wedding ring back on, life with Ryan was slowly becoming normal. They were still in therapy, still rebuilding trust, but for the first time Emily believed the worst was behind them.
Then Ryan's phone vibrated on the kitchen counter.
Emily glanced at the screen and froze.
STEVEN MADDOX.
The lawyer whose failed paperwork had left Ryan legally married to Natalie.
The message read:
We need to talk before your wife finds out.
Ryan entered the kitchen and stopped when he saw his phone in Emily's hand.
“Before I find out what?” she asked.
“I don't know. I haven't spoken to him.”
Emily didn't scream. That frightened Ryan more.
“Call him.”
Ryan dialed. No answer.
Then another message appeared.
This isn't about the divorce. It's about your son.
Emily's face changed.
Their baby, Noah, was sleeping upstairs.
She slowly looked at Ryan.
“What does that man know about our baby?”
Ryan stared at the screen.
For once, he had no secret answer.
“I swear, Emily. I don't know.”

But after everything they had survived, Emily knew one thing.
She wasn't going to wait for the truth to find her again.
