Chapter 18 - EMILY FACED THE CAMERASBy sunset, reporters surrounded the Carter home.
The old mall video resurfaced online.
Once again strangers were judging Emily's marriage without knowing the full story.
Ryan wanted to leave.
Emily refused.
The first time, fear and anger had controlled her.
Not again.
She walked outside alone.
Cameras immediately turned toward her.
“My son is four months old,” Emily said. “He has nothing to do with the decisions adults made before he was born.”
Reporters shouted questions.
Emily continued.
“All evidence has been given to our attorney. We will not respond to threats by surrendering our child's legal rights.”
One reporter shouted:
“Are you still staying with Ryan after all these secrets?”
Emily stopped.
Ryan watched through the window.
“My marriage isn't evidence for your story.”
Then she walked back inside.
Ryan looked at her.
“You didn't have to do that.”
“Yes, I did.”
Her phone rang.
Claire.
Emily answered.
“We found Steven,” Claire said.
“Where?”
“With investigators.”
Emily looked at Ryan.
Claire continued:
“He wants immunity.”
“For what?”
A pause.

Then Claire answered.
“For admitting your divorce was never an accident.”
