Chapter 22 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOORHer name was Evelyn Shaw.

Ryan didn't invite her inside until Emily agreed.

They sat across from each other while Noah slept upstairs.

Evelyn placed an old photograph on the table.

Thomas Carter stood beside her, younger, smiling.

“I was with your father for almost three years,” she said.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“While he was married to my mother?”

“Yes.”

Emily watched Ryan absorb the answer.

Evelyn continued.

She became pregnant.

Thomas panicked.

Not because he didn't want the child.

Because his father's estate plan contained a clause dividing a family trust equally among all legally recognized descendants.

“He paid you to disappear,” Ryan said.

Evelyn shook her head.

“He paid me to stay silent.”

She gave birth to a boy.

Lucas Shaw.

Ryan had a half brother.

“What happened to him?”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“He discovered who his father was eight years ago.”

“And?”

“He confronted Thomas.”

Ryan leaned forward.

“My father died nine years ago.”

“I know.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn slid another photograph toward him.

It showed Lucas standing beside someone Ryan recognized instantly.

Steven Maddox.

The attorney whose failures had caused Ryan and Natalie's divorce nightmare.

Emily felt her stomach turn.

“When was this taken?”

“Last year.”

Ryan stared at the photograph.

Maddox wasn't simply connected to his old divorce.

He was connected to his father's hidden son.

Then Evelyn said:

“Lucas isn't trying to take your money.”

Emily asked the obvious question.

“Then why is Noah's name in the file?”

Evelyn's answer changed the room.

“Because somebody is trying to take his.”
