Chapter 19 - STEVEN CONFESSEDSteven Maddox finally told investigators what happened nine years earlier.
Daniel had approached him during Ryan and Natalie's divorce.
William Carter was rewriting his estate plan.
Daniel knew Ryan's future children could eventually receive millions.
So he paid Steven to create delays.
Missed hearings.
Unfiled documents.
Administrative confusion.
Steven claimed he never intended the divorce to remain unresolved forever.
But his firm collapsed.
Ryan and Natalie moved on.
And Steven buried the truth.
Years later, William died.
Then Noah was born.
Suddenly the forgotten divorce became valuable again.
Daniel paid Steven $75,000 to stay silent and help challenge Noah's inheritance.
Ryan listened to the confession without speaking.
Emily held his hand.
Daniel was arrested the next morning in connection with fraud, falsified documents and witness intimidation.
That night Ryan sat beside Noah's crib.
“I spent my whole life trying to escape my family.”
Emily sat beside him.
“And you did.”
Ryan shook his head.
“I still learned their worst habit.”
“What?”
“Hiding the truth because I was afraid of what would happen.”
Emily looked at him.
“You did.”
Ryan lowered his eyes.
Then Emily squeezed his hand.
“But this time you didn't hide.”
May you like
Ryan finally looked at her.
And for the first time, Emily saw that he understood.
