Chapter 21 - THE ENVELOPE WITH NOAH'S NAMESix months after the courthouse finally closed the last dispute surrounding Noah's claim, Emily had begun to believe their life was becoming ordinary again.

Then the envelope arrived.
No return address.
No stamp.
Someone had placed it directly inside their mailbox.
Ryan opened it at the kitchen counter while Emily held Noah against her shoulder.
Inside was a photograph.
Ryan went completely still.
“What is it?” Emily asked.
He turned the picture around.
It showed Ryan's father, Thomas Carter, standing outside a private medical clinic twenty-seven years earlier.
Beside him was a pregnant woman Emily had never seen.
Across the bottom someone had written:
ASK RYAN WHO HIS FATHER PAID TO DISAPPEAR.
Emily looked at Ryan.
“Do you know her?”
“No.”
For once, Ryan answered immediately.
No hesitation.
No request for forty-eight hours.
He handed Emily everything.
A second sheet contained a bank transfer.
$120,000.
Sender: Thomas Carter.
Recipient: Evelyn Shaw.
Date: three weeks before Ryan's eighteenth birthday.
Then Emily saw the final line.
Beneficiary reference: CHILD C-2.
Ryan whispered, “C-2?”
Emily tightened her arms around Noah.
The doorbell rang.
Ryan checked the camera.
A woman in her late fifties stood outside.
She looked directly into the lens.

Then said:
“Tell Ryan Carter his brother is alive.”
