Chapter 2 - ECHOES FROM THE EDGEThe ambulance ride was a blur of flashing lights, medical checks, and oppressive silence. Victoria Vance insisted she was fine, refusing a hospital admission with a stern tone that returned briefly to her command-mode. But the moment the paramedics stepped back, the shivers returned, uncontrollable and deep-seated.

Ethan offered to walk her to a nearby taxi, but her driver was nowhere to be seen. Her phone was dead, ruined by the river. Ethan, knowing his own modest apartment was only three blocks away, made a split-second decision.
"My place is close," Ethan said softly. "It’s small, but it’s warm, dry, and away from the cameras."
Victoria looked at him, searching his face for any ulterior motive. She found only exhaustion and honest concern. She nodded slowly.
They walked in silence through the torrential downpour that had finally unleashed itself upon Ravenport. When they reached Ethan’s modest two-bedroom apartment, the scent of lavender and old paper welcomed them. It was a stark contrast to Victoria’s high-rise penthouse filled with marble and silence.
Maya immediately ran to her room to change out of her damp clothes, leaving Ethan and Victoria standing in the small hallway. Victoria was dripping onto the worn hardwood floor, trembling so violently her teeth rattled.
"I... I need to get out of these clothes," Victoria whispered, her hands pulling at her soaked blazer jacket with clumsy, shaking fingers. The wet silk clung to her skin like icy armor.
Ethan turned toward the hallway closet to grab a fresh towel and his largest flannel shirt. "I'll get you something clean and dry."
When he turned back around, holding the warm towel, Victoria had unbuttoned her damp shirt, revealing her pale, shivering shoulders. She froze, looking directly into Ethan's eyes with a mixture of raw vulnerability, fear, and an unreadable challenge.
"Will you stay if I undress?" her voice trembled, cutting through the silence of the room like a blade. "I... I can't be alone right now. Please. Don't leave the room."
Ethan froze. The request wasn't born of seduction; it was the desperate plea of a human being terrified of her own thoughts, terrified that if she was left alone behind a closed door, the dark thoughts from the bridge would consume her again.
Ethan kept his gaze respectfully fixed on her face, stepping backward toward the kitchen counter, remaining fully in her line of sight while giving her physical space.
"I won't leave," Ethan said, his voice steady, grounding, and absolute. "I'll stand right here. I'm not going anywhere, Victoria."

Victoria let out a ragged breath—a mix of a sob and relief. With trembling hands, she wrapped herself tightly in the large towel Ethan tossed her before removing her drenched attire behind the barrier of the towel, slipping into Ethan’s oversized flannel shirt and sweatpants.
For the first time in ten years, Victoria Vance felt safe. But outside the apartment, the storm was just gathering strength.
